Did you know that 80% of skin ageing on the face can be attributed to UV exposure (1)?
The sun spectrum that reaches the skin is made up of 5% UVB rays and 95% UVA rays, including visible light and infrared rays.
UVB rays do not penetrate the skin deeply. They burn the skin’s superficial layer and are responsible for tanning in the short run.
UVA rays penetrate deeper than UVB rays. They have more harmful, non-visible impacts, which are only revealed in the longer term, such as DNA damage and photo-ageing. They are responsible for lowering the amount of collagen in the skin and reducing the synthesis of elastin. This contributes to reduce the skin’s elasticity and cause loss of firmness. UVA rays also accelerate oxidative stress, which damages skin cells and tissues, and contribute to increase the level of melanin, resulting in dispersed hyperpigmented spots on the skin, also known as lentigos.
